Prayer for a Child

Prayer for a Child
by Rachel Field with pictures by Elizabeth Orton Jones/ published 1944 by Macmillan

As mentioned before, I love that all of the books that Ms. Jones illustrated are welcoming of all religions. Although for the most part they are Christian-focused, there is often a nod to world cultures and different views of who and what God is. A classic in every sense of the word, Prayer for a Child won the 1945 Caldecott Medal and has been in print ever since.

Bless this milk and bless this bread.
Bless this soft and waiting bed
Where I presently shall be
Wrapped in sweet security.

Echoing the love, hope and faith of all children, it is not just a prayer, but a ballad to all things that are right and good in the hearts of all of us when we are young. Even though I want my son to make his own religious choices when the time comes, this is still one I wouldn't miss sharing with him. Come on... look at those sweet innocent faces. ADORABLE!
