The Up and Down Book

The Up and Down Book
Mary Blair ~ Golden Press, 1964

If haven't heard, this summer Golden Books is releasing A Mary Blair Treasury of Golden Books. In case you are new to this blog (or the Internet in general), Mary Blair did concept paintings for some of Disney's most awesome films including Peter Pan, Cinderella, and Alice in Wonderland, and designed the 1964-65 New York World's Fair exhibit "It's a Small World" that later became a ride at Disneyworld/ land, beloved by children everywhere. She also created a few highly-prized titles for Golden Books that are being collected together for the first time. From the publisher...

"Fans of illustrator Mary Blair will cherish this never-before-published treasury of her Golden Books, which includes material that hasn't been in print in decades. I Can Fly is here in its unabridged glory, as are Baby's House, The Up and Down Book, and The Golden Book of Little Verses. Many of the finest pages from The New Golden Song Book are included, to round out this gorgeous collection. All of the original artwork has been digitally reproduced, and has never looked more breathtaking! "

To celebrate the publication of what will surely be the retro kids' hit of the year, I'm sharing a few pages from my original 1964 edition of The Up and Down Book. (Golden Books reprinted it in 2004 with some color changes.) Enjoy!

How had I not heard this yet? I'm so out of the loop. I'm a huge Mary Blair fan. I was distressed years ago when I saw the Golden Legacy: 65 Years of Golden Books exhibit and it included original art from I Can Fly that I had never seen before, and The Up and Down Book has been on my baby registry since before Soph was born. Now I'll get both without paying an arm and a leg. I wish it was a complete works, but it's better than nothing. Pre-ordering now...

Oh how I loved the Up and down Book as a child. I remember signing it out of the school library so many times I thought it was mine :)

Thank you for the memory.
