Great Monday Give: Lion

I'll get right to the point. Today's Great Monday Give book is a special one indeed ~ Lion by William Pène du Bois. For your chance to win this mighty fine (though slightly worn) paperback edition, please comment on this post by midnight, Sunday ~ July 6th. I love giving books away that I've picked up cheap just for the hell of it, so comment for your chance to win this really, really cool and cosmic tale about how heaven created the animals.

As for last week's Give... Once again, I used the highly-technical blind scroll and point method to find a winner... so let's give it up for Rachael ~ the new owner of a fine copy of Make Way for Ducklings. She had this to say about books in general...

"I LOVE reading and books in general (which is why I got my master's in lit!). When my husband and I got married he kept suggesting that I just check things out from the library rather than buying--fortunately he's come around since then. :-) But since he's still in grad school, I'm scouring garage sales and thrift stores to fill our bookcases these days and keep my two little girls in fresh reading material."

Now you can add one more to your collection, Rachael!! Please shoot me an e-mail at webe@soon.com, and I will get the book out to you ASAP via the slow boat to China.

Once again, thanks for reading all... enjoy the posts this week, and check back next Monday for more free book fun!

  2. Being a lover of old books and literature and discovering the awesome world of childrren's books, I'd love to be the winner this week. My daughter (now 2.5 years) loves to read and brings a book to bed each night - after reading six books before settling in for bed - to read to her stuffed animals.

Keep up the good work! I discovered your site from Design Mom's blog, and I am so happy I have!

  3. I just returned from my niece's baby naming, and we passed around a family favorite that's been changing hands amongst various parts of our mishpacha for decades: Juba This and Juba That. It's a great collection of tales (many quite morbid/surprising/weird) that are now embedded in the subconscionces of most of my cousins.

  16. Ooo! Ooo! Ooo! Pick me! Pick me! ... I love your blog, by the way. I just stumbled across it the other day and it's already a favorite. Can I ask, do you have any good online sites for vintage kids' book bargains? Other than, you know, eBay? Preferably something that's good for browsing and has stuff from the '60s and '70s? (Please forgive me if you get asked this all the time; as I said, I'm a new reader, and maybe I haven't done all the research I should be doing before asking.)

  19. Most of the stuff I buy from used book shops, goodwill, library sales and yard sales. If I am looking for something specific... I usually start with half.com as the books are relatively cheap and they are very fair on shipping... from there I just shop around at places like alibris... really, whoever has the best copy for less... for browsing, you might be outta luck there. i usually browse sites like http://1stedition.net/ just for authors names to check out....

for 60s and 70s books... i would recommend library sales as that seems the be the era that at least the libraries here are flushing. hope that helps.

  21. I just found your site from a friend's blog about a week ago and I am so happy I did!

I think the main reason I love your blog so much is because it totally reminds me of going to the school library as a kid. I was an insatiable reader and I would pick random books from the shelves, ones that probably hadn't been looked at for years (back when you could see the last stamp date on the card in the back). There's actually been a couple of posts that I've looked at with books I'd forgotten about until now (like "I was kissed by a seal"). And the best part is that I'm also finding new books for my son. Thanks so much for sharing your enthusiasm!
