The Great Holiday Give Day One: The Day the Cow Sneezed

The first give is, of course, the most highly-anticipated reprint of the year, The Day the Cow Sneezed by James Flora (reprinted by Enchanted Lion), a book I personally will be giving away this Christmas to every child we know. I'm not sure if you've stumbled across any books by this newbie Brooklyn-based publisher before, but all their titles rock. Their stuff is beautifully selected and put together, with a real emphasis on the tactile importance of the way a book looks and feels. Totally old school. Their reprint of The Day the Cow Sneezed is actually just as awesome, if not more so, than the original.... and you know how finicky I am about reprint misfires. The matte finish and weight of the paper. The size of the book... The most exciting part of all is that no one will ever have to pay $50 again for a used copy just to see the hilarity of one cow and his nasal woes. Really, one of the most brilliant and original stories from the much-loved mid-century era of children's picture book illustration. This book being reprinted is like my fantasy of being able to time travel back to bookstores of the past to shop come to life!!!! They also have more Flora reprints on plan for the future which totally makes me WANNA KISS THEM!

To be entered to win this fabulous reprint, simply comment on this post by 11:59 PM Sunday, November 9. The winner will be announced (along with all the other winners from the week) on Monday, November 10. The Great Holiday Give will last all week, so be sure and check back each day to find out about a new vintage reprint and enter to win a different book. This book was sent to me by the publisher to giveaway, but I don't think I need to tell you that this in no way educated my opinion of the publisher or the title in question. I've been bragging on this book since the beginning of time!

Have fun and good luck.

  11. Oh, hurray for a publishing company that will reprint the great children's books of mid-century!
Now, my question is: can we make requests to this publisher for other books we'd like to see get re-printed? Or is there anywhere we can put in our requests? My list would be long, but if I could get even one or two of my favorites back into circulation again, it would be fantastic!
Oh, and thanks for this book giveaway! I'd love to win!

  40. Unfortunately, I didn't grow up having picture books read to me. I changed that pattern when I had kids of my own and reading is a wonderful, bonding time everyday with us; however, until I discovered your marvelous blog I mainly read recently published books. I am making up for lost time and I love being able to expose my kids more frequently to books that were around when I was their age but that I myself didn't get a chance to read. I don't know who enjoys reading the children's books more, me or the kids.
