The Great Holiday Give Day Three: The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher

The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher
Robert Kraus ~ Virgil Partch
Simon and Schuster, 1969
Purple House Press, 2010

Next up on our week of Great Holiday Gives is a reprint from Purple House Press, the amazing publisher with the Lazarus touch whose mission is to "revive long lost, but well loved children's books." Ten years and 250,000 copies strong, the little publisher-that-could is still giving life back to books that had long since been out of print. These guys deserve the Nobel Prize for Awesome... thanks to them you can buy a nice new hardcover of books like Miss Suzy, Pickle-Chiffon Pie, Miss Twiggley's Tree and oh so many more favorites you previously had to shell out an arm and a leg for to get a ratty old ex-library edition. They seriously do put the awe in awesome.

This holiday season a lost classic returns to the minds and hearts of children everywhere with The Christmas Cookie Sprinkle Snitcher. Authored by the marvelous Robert Kraus (ala Leo the Late Bloomer and Milton the Early Riser) and the incomparable Virgil Partch, think the Grinch only more specific and dastardly. The snitcher is a bird-like, man-thingy that loves to steal sprinkles from unsuspecting holiday bakers and horde them in his cozy little cottage of evil. Of course, only a child can foil his sinister plan.

"Your Christmas fun, Snitcher," Little Nat said,
"Has driven the whole village out of its head!
For Christmas cookies without sprinkles
are like raisins without wrinkles,
and sleigh bells without tinkles
are Christmas cookies without sprinkles."

Such a fun read, with Vip's famous gag-style imagery and a peppy rhyme that keeps you laughing all the way. Ten thumbs up for everyone involved in the original creation of this book and all the folks who helped with the current day CPR.

To be entered to win a copy, simply comment on this post by 11:59 PM Sunday, November 9. The winner will be announced (along with all the other winners from the week) on Monday, November 10. The Great Holiday Give will last all week, so be sure and check back each day to find out about a new vintage reprint and enter to win a different book. This book was sent to me by the publisher to giveaway, but I don't think I need to tell you that this in no way educated my opinion of Purple House Press, this book and/or the level of awesomeness of either.

Have fun and good luck!
