Great Monday Give: Too Many Mittens

Good morn. Gonna be 83 today... Texas spring has arrived. That said, today's Great Monday Give has nothing to do with the current weather in San Antonio. It is, however, a super special book that if you don't already have, you should... Too Many Mittens by Florence and Louis Slobodkin. It's a very good vintage hardcopy, and all you have to do to be entered to win is comment on this post between now and midnight ~ Sunday ~ March 15.

As for last week's give, let's hear it for porkchop... who is building a collection for her adorable baby girl. Congrats and send me your info to webe(at)soon(dot)com, and I'll send out your copy of One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish faster than you can say Scrambled Eggs Super-dee-Dooper-dee-Booper Special de luxe a-la-Peter T. Hooper! Later gators.

  1. Another great book. We don't own this book, so it would be a great addition to our children's collection.

  3. We're still in a deep freeze here in Ottawa, Ontario so we'll be in mittens for a while yet. Winning this book would be a real pick-me-up!

  4. It may be warm in Texas, but we've got a blizzard warning for tomorrow. Sheesh. And I JUST put away all my winter gear... I guess I was hopeful... I need a few "mittens" too! Love to own this book.. it would be a great addition to my collection.

  12. Three inches of snow and counting! Would love this for my Max--he wears sock for mittens, as they tend to stay on better at his age (13 mos). Thanks!

  14. Too Many Mittens to wear with The Hundred Dresses! I always associate Slobodkin with Eleanor Estes.

  15. Hey, I'll throw my mitten in the ring. Louis Slobodkin, after all!

  16. I think that I had this book, but I definitely remember reading all of Louis Slobodkin's series "The Spaceship Under the Apple Tree". It may have been the first "science fiction" that I read, and it turned me into a life-long SF fan.

  17. Oh! Thank you so much for reminding me about this wonderful book! Here in Green Bay it is hard to imagine having too many mittens!

  19. I just saw your site via a post on boingboing.net with the book Let's Grow a Garden on it. My friend Davida recently showed me her old copy to read to our sons. I have been LOVING the instant waves of memory as I'm looking for kids books for my sons and stumbling across all these long lost favorites, like Giant John, Small Pig (two of my favorite Arnold Lobel titles), the Gus the ghost stories by Jane Thayer...and the list goes on.

So I freaked when I saw Too Many Mittens on the top of your page on my first visit!! I used to have that as a kid and loved it! Unfortunately almost of my old books didn't survive to my adulthood. I would be thrilled to win this copy, but at least I am newly reacquainted with it! Can't wait to pore over you blog more!

  32. I'm surprised I've not come across this one yet. I will see if my library has it. How lovely that you have vintage book giveaways. My favorite picturebook is one that is out of print, and very hard to find: Zigger Beans,by Diane Redfield Massie. Do you know it?

My husband sent me a link to your blog, and that is how I found it. Now, it's time to check out your Etsy link....

  38. Just by looking at the cover I can tell it's a book I'd like :)

Around Xmas I was looking a long time for some red woolen mittens for the kids - found one pair on Etsy...made the other pair :) Just wanted the kids to have red woolen mittens like in "The Little House on the Prairie" story I always loved.

  40. I came across your blog when someone sent me the link. I shall enjoy taking my time and reading all your blog entires and others' comments. I also started collecting vintage children's books when my children were born. I grew up overseas, so I am a great fan of the British author Enid Blyton, and the Ladybird books series for younger readers. My children are in 1st grade in school in NY and love these books now almost as much as I did.

  41. What a wonderful blog! I've been collecting children's books for my future children for about a year now, (I'm still pretty young and as of yet, unmarried, but it's such a fun hobby!) and I have always been attracted to the reprints of old books. Now I think I'll focus more on vintage books. Thanks for the great posts!

  42. Wow! What a great book! I'd love to be entered. thanks!

  43. Taylor... that's where I was when I started. Blowing $15 to $25 dollars a pop on new copies of classics... then I found Why I Built the Boogle House at a used bookstore and something clicked...

once you get hooked on the search, you never go back! though I do buy him new books for holidays just so he doesn't end up with a libarry full of books inscribed to other kids! he has to have some that are all his own.

I went to the Victoria and Albert museum yesterday and saw a book 'Sparkle and spin', and by googling it i found your website - thanks for all the hints abt fab old books, have already ordered the 'man who lost his head' one. i live in london...is that too far for your book give-away? i recently bought a whole heap of old children's books that the local library was throwing away, thinking i'd cut them up for cards and posters, etc. but i simply can't now that i have begun reading them - they are too good! Do you know Brian Wildsmith - amazing illustrations. Looking forward to keeping up w your blog...

“Too Many Mittens” would be a great addition to my son’s collection. I don’t think I’ve read that one, but I remember “Many Moons” fondly from my childhood.

    I’ve got my fingers crossed.

  54. Fantastic blog you have!!! I have another book of this serie by Slobodkin: MR. SPINDLES AND THE SPIDERS. Me and my children adore it, also because text is by Andrew Packard who is a close friend of us and used to live next door here in Neaples. The story reflects Andrew's love for animal (he is a zoologist, studing octopus behavour) and his respect for every kind of life... that's why he kept our terrace like a jungle! 57. I've visited your blog a couple times previously and enjoy it very much. My blog is partially named for a vintage book, "The Brimful Book." I haven't read "Too Many Mittens" but that is certainly something that we have a problem with here!

  58. omg. I had this book as a child! I totally forgot about it until I saw this pic on your blog. Even if I don't win, I will have to go find a copy for myself!

  59. As a fellow Texan (but misplaced in New York City) I am so very jealous to hear that spring has sprung--I do miss the lone star state. However, giving this book to my son for his 1st birthday would be a joy as he and I wrestled with keeping "too many mittens" on his little fingers this winter.
